April Updates: New Arrivals and Cellar List
New Arrivals
Alvaro Palacios Priorat Gratallops 2014 (Rare Wine Co.)

Palacios embodies the spirit of "The New Spain" better than anyone else in our shop. From an established Rioja family, he chose to learn from the French at Chateau Petrus and returned to Spain to work outside his family's domain and start his own in Priorat. Excellent, age-worthy wines, that due to nature of the Priorat varietals (Garnacha, Syrah, Mouvedre) are approachable in their youth. $53 / bottle

Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru 2014;
Albert Boxler Riesling Grand Cru Brand 2014
(Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant)

I remember the first Boxler wines I tasted back when they were in Robert Chatterdon's portfolio. I was shocked by the prices, prices that rivaled the best premier crus of Burgundy. After tasting, though, I saw that the wines themselves rivaled the best of Burgundy. Alsace is an extraordinary wine region, so far north, yet so dry and sunny all summer. These wines are pure, clean and razor sharp, coupled with all the voluptuousness and aromas we expect from Riesling. $88 & $81 / bottle

Domaine Labranche Laffont Madiran 2011 (Vintage 59 Imports)

Wow, Tannat! What a powerful grape. Notice the vintage, 2011: this is their current release. Madiran is in Southwest France and there is enormous diversity among appellations here, but nothing is quite as bold as Madiran. $20 / bottle

Ontanon Rioja Gran Reserva 2005 (Gabriel Wilson Selections)

I wish it was always this easy... splendid, classic twelve-year-old wine for $42. I haven't gotten that far into the weeds of Rioja yet, but hopefully I've got a long life of wine-drinking ahead of me to jump down that rabbit hole. In the meantime, with bottles like this on my shelf I don't ask a lot of questions. I just pop, pour and savor. I can't believe it only costs $42 / bottle

Jean Foillard Fleurie 2013 & 2014 (Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant)

That's right, your choice of two vintages of Foillard. We've got magnums of this too! Everyone makes a big deal about the Morgon Cote du Py, but I've always been in love with the Fleurie. So if you don't buy it, don't worry, I'll drink them! $43 / 750ml $91 1.5 L

Chateau Chasse-Spleen Moulis en Medoc 2014 (Vintage Imports)

Last September while visiting Bordeaux, I shared a bottle of 1961 Chasse-Spleen in one of those delightful bistros that has links of sausage and whole cuts of meat hanging in the open kitchen when you walk in. That's right, a place that hung sausage in the window (and not by trend but by tradition) had 1961 Chasse-Spleen on their wine list. This wine was more than solid. It was alive and taking me back to an era I had not known or lived. I couldn't bring back a case of 1961, but I knew that the 2014's would live to see a ripe old age one day. $39 / bottle

Antiquum Farm "Juel" Pinot Noir 2013 Willamette Valley

Only 225 cases produced, this farmer grows fruit for some very famous producers in Willamette. His modest production is from the little fruit he keeps for his own winery. When he visited us at French Grocery, I fell in love with this big burley man (Stephen Hagen) like a bottle of Foillard Fleurie. He spoke my language. Listening to him talk about farming, his small children lending a hand, his chickens scratching away weeds from under vines, will make you want to drop everything and live on his farm. Drinking his wine, though, you will be happy enough to stay put at home and savor every drop. If you like the Burgundy we sell, you won't be disappointed. $41 / bottle
